Our mission is to deliver an interdisciplinary education that brings together theater, visual arts, mathematics, and the natural sciences in a multilingual setting. We help students connect with—and value—the world’s cultural heritage, while ensuring equal opportunities for everyone across our diverse communities.

Community
involvement

Through theatrical productions, cultural events, and concerts, Scarlet Sails brings people together through the arts and creates opportunities for audiences from different cultural backgrounds to connect. By making performances accessible to both English-speaking and multilingual audiences, we celebrate cultural traditions while creating an inclusive space for shared experiences and new perspectives.

Scarlet Sails welcomes artists and audiences of all generations, creating opportunities for creative collaboration, cultural exchange, and meaningful connections through live performance.

Geographical
area and target
audience

Scarlet Sails serves the Portland metropolitan area and surrounding communities, welcoming both Russian-speaking and English-speaking audiences. We produce theater in both Russian and English, bringing together artists and audiences from diverse cultural backgrounds. Our productions and events are open to the broader community, creating opportunities to connect through theater across cultures and generations.

History of
Achievements

Since 2015, Scarlet Sails has presented more than 250 performances, cultural events, and community programs, reaching over 5,000 participants and audience members in the Portland metropolitan area and beyond. The organization produces theater in both Russian and English and has expanded its work to engage artists and audiences from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

Scarlet Sails’ theater work has received recognition at regional theater festivals, including awards for Outstanding Direction, Outstanding Actor, and Outstanding Lighting Design at the Bellevue International Theatre Festival. These achievements reflect the organization’s continued growth from a community-based theater into a producing organization creating increasingly ambitious work with local artists.

Beyond its mainstage productions, Scarlet Sails develops participatory arts programs that give community members opportunities to create, perform, and share their own work. Community Story Lab brings participants together through storytelling and theater, while Script to Stage provides a structured process for developing a script from its first reading through rehearsal and public presentation. The organization has also expanded its music programming through a community vocal competition that creates performance opportunities for singers and brings together participants and audiences from different backgrounds.

Scarlet Sails maintains an active presence in schools and at community and cultural events. Through an ongoing partnership with Woodburn School District, the organization presents an annual holiday theater production for K–12 students, providing young audiences with access to live theater as part of their school experience. Scarlet Sails also participates in events including Beaverton Night Market, Beaverton Welcoming Week, Slavic New Year celebrations at Multnomah County and Gresham libraries, and the Ridgefield Multicultural Festival. These partnerships and public programs extend the organization’s reach beyond its regular theater audiences and strengthen its connections with communities across the region.

Over the years, Scarlet Sails has also provided arts and educational programming for children and youth, including theater, vocal training, reading and speaking programs, and performance opportunities. Artistic Director Olga Sotiriadi has led annual theater master classes at the Russian-Speaking Youth Leadership Conference, extending the organization’s educational work beyond its own programs.

Role of
Volunteers

Volunteers and supporters play a key role in the foundation's activities, participating in performances, creating sets, handcrafting decorations and costumes, designing promotional materials, and assisting audiences during shows.
