About the Play
Set in a remote village in western Ireland, The Beauty Queen of Leenane centers on Maureen Folan, a lonely woman in her forties who lives with and cares for her aging mother, Mag. Their relationship is built on dependence, resentment, manipulation, and a darkly comic struggle for control.
When Maureen meets Pato Dooley, the possibility of love and a life beyond her mother’s house suddenly appears. But Mag is not willing to let her go.
Martin McDonagh’s dark comedy is an intimate and unsettling story of loneliness, family bonds, missed chances, and the damage people can inflict on those closest to them.
Recommended for mature audiences. The play contains strong language, sexual references, emotional abuse, and violence.
