ABOUT THE PRODUCTION

"Blaise" is a lighthearted comedy about love, infused with subtle French humor. The play was written by French playwright Claude Magnier in 1959. In October 2018, Scarlet Sails Theater staged the play in Russian for the first time in the United States and presented it in Portland, where all four performances sold out.

The production is performed in Russian with English subtitles. A screen beside the stage displays the dialogue in real time. We created a new English translation of the play specifically for this production so that important details would not be lost.

On stage, audiences enter a retro world expressed through the sets and costumes, along with a distinctly French atmosphere of dance and colorful characters. Blaise is a poor artist whose girlfriend works as a model. She comes up with a brilliant idea: marry Blaise off to the daughter of her wealthy lover. For the family, the prospective groom's noble name is the only thing that matters in this "deal." But the plan begins to unravel when a pretty young maid, a fiery Spanish dancer, and several other women burst into Blaise's life. A whirlwind of romance and intrigue sweeps everyone along, producing one absurd and hilarious situation after another.

The performance runs three hours with two intermissions. It includes scenes of kissing and embracing, and some scenes feature partially undressed characters, but there is no explicit or vulgar content. We have given the production a PG rating so parents can use this description to decide whether it is appropriate for their child.
